On June 1, 2026, on Children's Day, a new mother's home and humanitarian aid center were opened at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ostankino, Moscow, which became the 87th women's shelter opened with the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church. There are also over 270 church humanitarian aid centers in Russia.
The new shelter is designed to accommodate six families with children at the same time. The length of stay is determined individually: employees help women to build a personal route out of a crisis situation — from solving social and legal issues to finding work and reconciliation with relatives. The first three families are already living in the shelter.
In the new humanitarian aid center, families and single women with children can receive free clothes, strollers, cribs, medicines, food and hygiene products.
"All mothers in need will receive the necessary assistance here. The clergy, staff and volunteers who will work at this center will do everything to ensure that the lives of young mothers and their children are surrounded by care and love," Metropolitan Arseny of Zvenigorod, governor of the Northeastern Vicariate of Moscow, said at the opening. He performed a prayer service at the church in Ostankino, and then consecrated the premises of the new house for his mother.
The new shelter and the humanitarian aid center became divisions of the church's "Home for Mom," which was created by the Synodal Department for Charity in Moscow and has been operating since 2012. During this time, more than 1,800 women have received temporary accommodation here, and about 100,000 people have received humanitarian aid.
The new shelter, like all other church shelters, is ready to accommodate families with children and pregnant women, regardless of nationality and religion. Special attention will be paid to pregnant women who want to undergo additional examinations in Moscow clinics after receiving a diagnosis of fetal pathology.
