The XI Christmas Educational Readings opened at the National Library of Belarus, bringing together representatives of the Church, government bodies, public organizations, as well as scholars, educators, and cultural figures, according to the state news agency BELTA.

This year’s forum is centered on the theme “Enlightenment and Modernity: Personal Formation and the Challenges of Our Time.” Speaking at the opening session, Metropolitan Benjamin, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus and head of the Minsk and Zaslavl Diocese, emphasized that cooperation between the state, society, and the Church helps in jointly addressing the pressures of a rapidly changing world.

“This is a sign that we stand together and are capable of developing solutions that respond to the challenges of modern life,” the metropolitan said.

Participants of the forum aim to reflect on the spiritual, cultural, and moral transformations taking place amid global shifts. Metropolitan Benjamin noted that modern technologies, information overload, and evolving value systems are influencing individuals, families, and society at large.

He devoted particular attention to the effects of the digital environment. “People of all ages are drawn to short videos, games, and neural networks. As a result, the ability for deep reading and analysis is diminishing,” he warned.

Despite these challenges, the metropolitan expressed optimism, stressing that enlightenment and education remain powerful tools for overcoming contemporary problems.

Among the notable attendees were Belarusian cosmonauts Marina Vasilevskaya and Oleg Novitsky. Ahead of the event, the “Light of Mercy” competition was held, recognizing volunteers and social initiatives for their contributions.

The Christmas Readings will continue through December 10, featuring conferences, roundtables, and discussions in churches, monasteries, and public venues across Minsk, addressing pressing societal issues.
