The Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa plans to begin a mission in eastern Kenya. This decision was announced following a meeting of clergy in Kenya, which took place in the country's capital, Nairobi, on July 9th, according to the press service of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
Currently, the Russian Orthodox Church is most active in the southwest of the country, with a significant community of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa located in the Kisii District.
During the meeting, Father Georgy Maximov conveyed the blessing of the Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, Metropolitan-Leonid, to the Kenyan clergy and expressed gratitude for their efforts. The participants discussed matters concerning church life in the country and reviewed the work done over the six months since the Russian Church was registered in Kenya.
The Russian Orthodox Church was officially registered in Kenya in February 2023. During this time, 993 people from 22 parishes have attended courses on Sacred Scripture and Catechism. Many Kenyan priests have successfully completed online theological courses offered by the Moscow Theological Academy. Three Kenyan students are studying in Russian seminaries, and another ten are preparing for admission. Additionally, as reported during the meeting, four Kenyans have been selected to attend pastoral courses in Moscow, with two already enrolled and two more joining them soon.
The Russian Church is providing assistance to two Orthodox children's shelters in Kenya, one located in Nyabigege and the other in Rigena. Wells are being installed, livestock is being purchased, and support is being given for repairs at the shelters. Thanks to the support of donors, assistance has been provided for the education expenses of 47 children from poor Orthodox families in the past six months, including orphans.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the positive developments and progress made by the Russian Orthodox Church in Kenya since its registration, showcasing the commitment to spiritual growth and charitable endeavors in the region.
