The Synodal Summer Church Music School of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) concluded its annual session on August 1, 2024, the feast day of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The two-week course, which took place at the Church of St. Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer in Cologne, brought together students from across Europe, including Germany, Ireland, Estonia, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, the UK, and the Czech Republic.

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, the students deepened their knowledge of church choir services, psalmody, and choir leadership. The program included specialized training for cantors, choristers, and readers, with more than 100 hours of lessons across ten subjects. The participants also had the opportunity to take part in ten divine services, gaining hands-on experience in antiphonal singing in two separate choirs.

A major highlight of this year’s session was the graduation of the first cohort of students who completed the three-year course, receiving certificates recognizing their spiritual and practical growth in church music.

For those unable to attend the full course, an intensive one-week seminar was offered. This included theoretical and practical lessons on the Typikon (liturgical order), liturgical books, choral reading, and vocal preparation.

The festival services on July 27-28 were led by Bishop Iov of Stuttgart, vicar of the German Diocese of ROCOR. Following the Sunday Divine Liturgy, Bishop Iov delivered a lecture on the Church’s liturgical regulations, and Father Andrei (German) hosted a master class on bell ringing.

The school is overseen by the All-European Church Music Committee (AECMC), a part of the Synodal Music Commission of ROCOR. Established in 2020 after the All-European Liturgical Music Conference in London, the committee aims to preserve and develop the traditions of Orthodox liturgical chanting within the parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, under the pastoral leadership of Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany and Bishop Iriney of London and Western Europe.
