The future of the Christian family and its role in contemporary society were at the center of an international theological symposium that opened at the Patriarchal Palace in Bucharest.
The symposium, titled “The Christian Family — Light and Witness in Contemporary Society,” is being held from October 5–8 and brings together clergy, theologians, academics, government representatives and specialists from Romania and other countries. The forum focuses on family life, the upbringing of children and the role of the Church in supporting families.
Romanian Patriarch Daniel took part in the opening session, describing the family as an “icon of God’s love for humanity” and emphasizing its importance in Christian life. He said that the family is where people first learn prayer, love, patience, forgiveness and care for others.
The patriarch also highlighted challenges facing families today, including rising divorce rates, weakening relationships between generations, the declining role of the family in religious education and a range of economic, social and spiritual pressures.
According to Patriarch Daniel, the Church should strengthen its support for families by developing spiritual guidance and counseling programs, assisting parents and placing greater emphasis on the religious education of children.
The relationship between the family, school and Church was another major topic of discussion. Romeo Moșoiu, a representative of Romania’s Ministry of Education, said that children first learn about love, responsibility, patience and respect for others within the family. He stressed that education cannot fulfill its mission without families, while families likewise need the support of schools and the Church.
The symposium is organized by the Romanian Patriarchate in cooperation with the Faculty of Orthodox Theology at the University of Bucharest. Its program includes theological and academic presentations addressing family life, child-rearing, preparation of young people for marriage and pastoral support for families facing difficult circumstances.
Participants are also examining contemporary challenges such as secularization, migration and professional mobility, the impact of the digital environment on human relationships, and the weakening transmission of Christian values between generations.
Representatives of the Antiochian Church and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople are among the speakers at the four-day gathering, which seeks to explore ways in which Christian communities can respond to the changing social environment while strengthening family life and faith formation.
