From February 7 to 14, 2025, free church weddings will take place at the Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos in Sofia for couples who are already legally married. The initiative, organized by the Association for Society and Values, has been blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria, according to the online publication dveri.bg.
International Marriage Week is observed annually in many countries, aiming to strengthen marital relationships. In Bulgaria, it is traditionally accompanied by events highlighting the importance of marriage and ways to overcome family challenges.
To participate in the church wedding ceremony, couples must provide a civil marriage certificate and baptismal documents. The church will cover all administrative costs. The only optional expense is a voluntary donation for the church choir, should the couple wish for musical accompaniment.
The Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos has previously participated in similar initiatives. In 2015, the Church of St. Nedelya offered discounted wedding ceremonies, but this year, the service will be entirely free. The organizers aim to emphasize the importance of church marriage and encourage families to seek God's blessing.
