Patriarch Kirill awarded State Duma Deputy Maria Butina with the Order of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga (Second Degree), according to the website of the Russian Orthodox Church. Miss Butina received the award for "contribution to the development of Russia."

In bestowing the award the Patriarch declared,

"You are performing an important and responsible service in the lower house of the Russian parliament, dealing with the current international agenda and the protection of human rights in our country. Your active citizenship, patriotism and desire to firmly defend national interests have earned you the recognition of colleagues and the general public."

He proceeded to wish Butina health, peace of mind and God's help in good deeds.

The Order of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga is an award of the Russian Orthodox Church bestowed upon women “for merits in various fields of church, state and public service, as well as for works for the benefit of their neighbors.” It is named for Princess Olga, who played a role in the early Christianization of the Rus’ Kingdom in the 10th century.

Miss Butina is probably best known in America for her involvement in pro-gun rights organizations like the NRA, her attempts to expand gun rights and responsible ownership in Russia through the organization Right to Bear Arms (Russian: Право на оружие), and being caught up in corrupt FBI investigations and rigged trials concerning “Russian involvement” in the 2016 US Presidential elections, which was later proven to be false. According to her own account, she was forced into a plea deal and ended up serving 18 months in a Federal prison in the US. She was deported upon her release. She has since been elected to the Russian State Duma representing the Kirov region. She insists all she tried to do was build better ties between America and Russia, and feels compelled to speak out against the bad conditions she experienced in American jails and prisons.
