On October 27, 2025, the autumn session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Polish Orthodox Church took place under the leadership of Metropolitan Savva of Warsaw and All Poland, as reported by the church's official portal, Cerkiew.pl.

During the session, the hierarchs reaffirmed the Polish Orthodox Church's steadfast position regarding the divisions within global Orthodoxy. In a statement issued by the Synod, they emphasized the need for a collective resolution to current crises and called for the convening of a Pan-Orthodox Council, which, according to Polish hierarchs, should promote the restoration of church unity.

Additionally, the participants discussed the status of theological dialogues with the Roman Catholic and Evangelical Churches, as well as issues of cooperation with the World Council of Churches and the Conference of European Churches.

In October 2022, the Holy Assembly of the Polish Orthodox Church had addressed Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, proposing to convene the Synaxis of the Primates of Local Churches to discuss the situation following the establishment of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). At that time, Polish bishops reaffirmed their non-recognition of the OCU's canonical status and stressed that overcoming the schism is possible only through a synodal approach.

A Pan-Orthodox Council gathers the primates and representatives of all autocephalous Orthodox Churches to address matters affecting global Orthodoxy. Its convocation is seen as a modern continuation of the ancient synodal tradition, tracing back to the Seven Ecumenical Councils (4th–8th centuries).

Preparation for a possible Pan-Orthodox Council has been ongoing throughout the 20th century. From 1961 to 1986, a series of Pan-Orthodox meetings and inter-Orthodox commissions were held to discuss theological, canonical, and inter-church issues. This longstanding preparation culminated in the Council of June 2016 on the island of Crete, attended by ten of the fourteen universally recognized autocephalous Churches. The Russian, Antiochian, Bulgarian, and Georgian Churches refrained from participation, citing the need for broader consensus.

In contemporary ecclesiastical discourse, the term "Pan-Orthodox Council" is used to denote a potential new church-wide meeting that could facilitate the restoration of unity and a coordinated resolution to pressing issues within the Orthodox world.
