The Romanian Patriarchate has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims of a devastating explosion that struck an apartment building in Bucharest early Thursday morning, leaving at least three people dead and 15 injured, 13 of whom were hospitalized.

The explosion occurred on Calea Rahovei, in an eight-story residential building, causing the collapse of the fifth and sixth floors and damaging neighboring structures. Authorities believe a gas leak may have triggered the blast, though a full investigation is still underway.

In an official statement, the Patriarchate said:
"With profound sorrow, we have learned of the tragic event, where a powerful explosion led to the collapse of two floors and impacted the lives of many families. We pray to God for the repose of the souls of the departed, the swift recovery of the injured, and comfort for all those grieving."

Clergy from nearby parishes have already begun offering spiritual and material support to those affected. The Archdiocese of Bucharest has announced a special fundraising appeal to be held on Sunday, October 19, in all churches across the region. Donations will be directed to the Patriarchate’s relief fund and distributed to families who have lost their homes.

Emergency services report that over 500 people have been displaced by the explosion. All residents of the building and surrounding area have been evacuated and are being provided temporary housing in local hotels.

Interim Bucharest Mayor Stelian Buidoveanu confirmed that municipal services and emergency crews, including firefighters and mobile intensive care units, responded swiftly to the scene. More than ten ambulances and specialized rescue teams were deployed in the immediate aftermath.

Prime Minister Ilie Boloyan visited the site and announced that the damaged building is likely beyond repair and will be demolished following structural assessments. He also noted that nearby Dimitrie Bolintineanu High School sustained damage from the blast wave. All students and staff were safely evacuated, and classes have been temporarily suspended.

The Romanian Orthodox Church, known for its active role in social assistance, is calling on the faithful to support those impacted by the tragedy. Patriarchal representatives emphasized the need for compassion, prayer, and practical support during this difficult time.

As investigations continue and recovery efforts unfold, both Church and state authorities have pledged to work together to ensure that survivors receive the help they need — and that such a tragedy is not repeated.
