The Synod of the non-canonical "Orthodox Church of Ukraine" decided to "remove from the church calendar" the memorial day of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky.
"To remove from the Church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine the memorial day of St. Alexander of Novgorod (Nevsky), in the scheme of Alexei, on November 23," the PCU said in a statement.
Instead, on November 23, the OCU decided to celebrate the memory of another Alexander, the founder of the monastery of the "Sleepless", whose memorial day is usually celebrated in the Church on March 7.
Prince Alexander Nevsky is famous for his victory over the Swedish army in the battle of 1240. At various times, he held the titles of Prince of Novgorod, Kiev and Vladimir. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Alexander Nevsky in 1547.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine was established in December 2018. In January 2023, the head of the OCU, Metropolitan Epiphanius (Sergei Dumenko), called on Ukrainians to abandon their saint, in whose honor they were baptized, if he is related to the ROC or Russia.
