President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin visited the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra on June 26, 2024. At the Trinity Cathedral of the Lavra, the President was met by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
Vladimir Putin was accompanied at the cathedral by the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation O.B. Lyubimova and the vicar of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, Rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, Bishop Kirill Sergiev Posad and Dmitrovsky.
Vladimir Putin bowed to the icon of the Holy and Life-Giving Trinity, painted by the Monk Andrei Rublev. This icon was created in the first half of the XV century for the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral of the Lavra.
The shrine returned to its historical place on June 22, 2024, on the eve of the feast of the Holy Trinity (Pentecost). His Holiness Patriarch Kirill led the bringing of the image to the Trinity Cathedral.
During his visit to the Lavra, Vladimir Putin also venerated the relics of the monastery's founder, St. Sergius of Radonezh, and familiarized himself with the plans for the development of Sergiev Posad.

The decision to return the icon of the Most Holy Trinity of St. Andrei Rublev's letter to its historical place in the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin in May 2023.
The Holy Trinity was painted by the holy iconographer in the first half of the XV century for the local row of the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral at the request of St. Nikon of Radonezh, a disciple and successor of St. Sergius of Radonezh. The image has become an ideal artistic expression of the Christian dogma of a Consubstantial and Tri-Hypostatic God. Back in 1551, at the Stoglav Cathedral, convened by Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the icon was recognized as a model for the image of the Holy Trinity.
After staying in the Trinity Cathedral for half a millennium, in 1929, by order of the People's Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR, the shrine was transferred to the State Tretyakov Gallery. Being a masterpiece of ancient Russian art, the Holy Trinity has become one of the main exhibits of the museum. A list created by restorer Nikolai Baranov was placed in the iconostasis of the temple. Almost a hundred years later, on July 17 and 18, 2022, on the memorial day of St. Andrei Rublev and on the 600th anniversary of the finding of the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh, Rublev's original was brought to the Trinity Cathedral for temporary worship. This became a landmark event in the life of the Lavra.
In the summer of 2023, the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra and the State Tretyakov Gallery signed an agreement on the transfer of the Holy Trinity icon to the Lavra. Since January 5, this year, the shrine has been temporarily located in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Previously, since 1997, believers had the opportunity to worship the icon once a year on the Day of the Holy Trinity in the church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi, Moscow.
Now the shrine will be available for public worship all the time: the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra is an operating temple in which services are held daily: fraternal prayer, Divine Liturgy, prayer services with the akathist of the Mother of God and St. Sergius of Radonezh.
The icon was delivered to Sergiev Posad on a specialized transport, which is designed for professional transportation of works of art and is equipped with a climate control box with a shock absorption system. In the temple, the shrine is installed in a specially made stationary kiosk, which maintains the climate necessary for the preservation of the icon. The kiosk is equipped with an automatic control system and maintenance of temperature and humidity conditions, as well as armored glass covered with protective layers, including from exposure to ultraviolet rays.
