Metropolitan Tikhon, the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), has urged clergy and faithful to pray for those affected by the wildfires in California. His statement, published on the OCA website, calls for prayers for those who have lost homes, loved ones, and livelihoods, as well as for the first responders battling the flames. Metropolitan Tikhon also encouraged finding ways to assist the victims, following the Gospel’s teaching.

"I ask everyone to pray for all those affected by the devastating wildfires in California. Many have lost their homes, livelihoods, and even loved ones. We ask the Lord to grant strength to those fighting the fires and providing emergency relief and to show mercy to those who are suffering. Consider finding tangible ways to support those in need, bearing one another’s burdens as Christ commands us (Galatians 6:2)," Metropolitan Tikhon wrote.

According to American media, the wildfires, which began on January 7, have engulfed Los Angeles County, destroying more than 12,000 structures across 15,000 hectares. The worst-hit areas include Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Altadena. Around 180,000 people have been evacuated, 13 have died, and another 13 remain missing.

Rescue services report that the fire in Pacific Palisades is 11% contained. However, strong winds forecasted for the coming days may worsen the situation. Hundreds of firefighters are working around the clock, but residents have expressed concerns about inadequate infrastructure, as many fire hydrants were found to be dry. California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered an independent review of public utility services.

A curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM has been imposed in affected areas, and thousands of National Guard troops have been deployed to protect residents' property. Police have arrested 20 individuals suspected of looting.

Metropolitan Tikhon expressed hope for both prayerful support and practical assistance to all those in need during this crisis.
