The head of the Greek Orthodox Church has strongly condemned the vandalism of a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon, calling for peace and an end to violence amid heightened regional tensions.

Archbishop Ieronymos II, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, denounced the incident, which took place in the Christian village of Debel. According to media reports and footage circulated on social media, a soldier from the Israel Defense Forces allegedly removed a statue of the crucified Jesus from its cross, overturned it, and struck it with an object resembling a hammer.

In an official statement, Ieronymos emphasized that Jesus Christ’s teachings center on love, repentance, and forgiveness rather than violence. He also highlighted the spiritual continuity between the Old and New Testaments, referencing Christ’s sacrifice for humanity’s salvation.

The archbishop welcomed the response of Israeli authorities, including remarks by Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemned the act. At the same time, he warned that ongoing military conflicts inevitably fuel aggression and lead to civilian casualties, particularly among children.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the incident, stating it is being treated with “utmost seriousness.” Officials stressed that the soldier’s actions do not reflect the army’s values and announced the launch of an internal investigation, with disciplinary measures expected to follow.

Local authorities in Debel described the act as an affront to religious sentiments and a violation of sacred symbols. Israeli officials have expressed readiness to assist in restoring the damaged monument.

The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the region following clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, and shortly after a temporary ceasefire was declared. Church leaders say they continue to pray for peace both globally and within individuals’ hearts.
