Serbian Patriarch Porfirije emphasized the vital role of monasteries in reflecting the spiritual condition of a nation during a visit to the Mislođin Monastery on Friday, coinciding with the Feast of the Life-Giving Spring.
During the visit, the Patriarch consecrated a newly built chapel and monastic residence, and led a Divine Liturgy at the Church of St. Christopher, according to the official website of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
In his sermon, Patriarch Porfirije underlined the importance of monasteries as indicators of a society’s spiritual vitality. “Monasteries are places where the spiritual health of a people can be seen. The number of monks shows how alive we are,” he said.
He also reflected on Bright Week, the period following Easter in the Orthodox Christian calendar, describing it as a symbol of the triumph of life over death. Stressing the central Christian message of love, he added: “The Lord is love. He gives Himself entirely to us and calls each of us to meet Him, but it is important that we also choose to accept this divine embrace.”
The festive service was attended by clergy members and more than 200 worshippers.
Located in the Obrenovac area near Belgrade, Mislođin Monastery has roots dating back to the Middle Ages. According to tradition, it existed as early as the 13th century, though it was repeatedly destroyed during various wars. Its modern revival began in 2010, and the Church of St. Christopher was consecrated in 2015 by the late Serbian Patriarch Irinej.
