The head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Daniil of Bulgaria, বলেছেন that individuals are capable of overcoming their weaknesses and transforming their lives—even if they repeatedly fall into the same mistakes.

Speaking during a service at the Pokrov Monastery, Daniil emphasized that the key to personal change lies not in avoiding failure altogether, but in maintaining a sincere desire to improve. “Even if we commit the same mistakes many times, God supports a person’s desire to change,” he said, according to the Bulgarian News Agency.

The patriarch stressed that religious life is not defined by external rituals alone, but by inner sincerity and self-reflection. “A true approach to the sacred is not a formality or habit, but an inner choice and an honest conversation with oneself,” he noted.

According to Daniil, spiritual growth requires continuous effort, as individuals must confront recurring thoughts, habits, and temptations. However, he said that with determination and perseverance, it is possible to overcome destructive behaviors and achieve inner renewal.

As an example, Daniil pointed to the life of Mary of Egypt, a revered ascetic from the 5th–6th centuries. Her story, he explained, illustrates that transformation is often a long and difficult process rather than an instant change.

According to Christian tradition, Mary of Egypt lived a life of excess in her youth before experiencing a spiritual awakening in Jerusalem, where she was unable to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This moment led her to repentance and a radical change in life.

She later withdrew into the desert beyond the Jordan River, where she spent nearly 50 years in solitude, fasting, and prayer. Her life, recorded by Zosimas of Palestine, has become a powerful symbol in Christian tradition of repentance and the possibility of profound personal transformation.

Daniil concluded that her example demonstrates how even those with a troubled past can ultimately find spiritual freedom through persistence, honesty, and faith.
