From June 1 to 4, 2024, under the blessing of Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, Metropolitan Konstantin of Zaraisk, a cleric from the exarchate in Côte d'Ivoire, Father Parthenios Dansou, conducted a missionary trip to Liberia, according to the exarchate's website.
During the mission, Father Parthenios met with two Protestant communities that expressed a desire to convert to Orthodoxy and began their catechization. On June 4, Father Parthenios performed the sacrament of Baptism for the leaders of these two communities, bestowing upon them the names Vladimir and Gorazd. As catechization progresses, other members of the communities will also be prepared for Baptism.
Liberia is the first country to join the list of nations where the Russian Orthodox Church is present in Africa this year.
Liberia, a country in West Africa, is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast. The nation has a population of approximately 5 million people. Christianity is the predominant religion, with most Christians being Protestants (including Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, and Lutherans), and there is also a significant Catholic community. About 12-20% of the population practices Islam. Some of the population adheres to traditional African beliefs, which include animism and ancestor worship, and there are also small groups of Hindus and Buddhists.
