From April 1, photographs of ancient and modern temples will appear on advertising structures throughout Moscow, around which streets, squares and entire districts of the city have been formed for centuries, according to the Foma magazine.
A large-scale cultural and educational project "Temples – the history of Moscow" is launching in Moscow. Its organizers, the Spyridon Trimifuntsky Center and the Nearby urban project, aim to remind residents and visitors of the inextricable link between church architecture and the development of urban space.
As the organizers explained, for centuries it was around the temples that settlements arose, squares were formed and street names appeared. Many of these place names have survived to this day, preserving the memory of ancient churches and monasteries.
The project was based on a series of photographs selected based on the results of a special photo contest. From April 1, the best works will be placed on street advertising structures throughout the city. Thus, the capital will temporarily turn into a large-scale open gallery: getting to know the history will take place right on the usual routes, without having to go to the museum.
"Thousands of people will be able to see Moscow churches in a new artistic interpretation right on the streets. The project reminds of an important value — respect for the history and cultural roots of Moscow. Temples remain not just architectural monuments, but living witnesses of the centuries—old history of the city," the Nearby project emphasized.
The award ceremony for the authors of the best photographs will take place on April 3 at the center of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society.
