The parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), dedicated to St. John of Shanghai in Belfast, Northern Ireland, celebrated a significant event over the past weekend. The celebration marked the feast of the uncovering of the relics of their heavenly patron, St. John.

In preparation for the feast, a mass baptism took place in the Irish Sea, with 11 individuals receiving the sacrament. According to the parish’s social media page, the baptisms were performed by Father Justin Venn, the rector of the St. John of Shanghai Church, and Father Robert Williams from the Church of St. Patrick in Clifden.

The following day, Fathers Justin and Robert led the Divine Liturgy in honor of St. John’s feast day. “We give thanks to Almighty God for the newly enlightened and for the many blessings bestowed upon our parish through the prayers of our patron saint, St. John,” the parish shared in a statement.

The calling of the future Primate to episcopal ministry was formally established by a resolution of the Holy Synod in early March 1976; on the eve of the consecration, the rite of nomination took place, and on March 14—on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy—at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Archimandrite Kirill (Gundyaev), rector of the Leningrad theological schools, was consecrated Bishop of Vyborg.

Exactly 50 years ago, on March 13, 1976, at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian at the Leningrad Theological Academy, the rite of nomination took place; and on the following day, March 14, the First Sunday of Great Lent, the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, during the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Leningrad, the episcopal consecration of Archimandrite Kirill — the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ — was performed. The service was presided over by the ever-memorable Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), whom His Holiness Patriarch Kirill calls his spiritual mentor and teacher.
