A catastrophic flood, already being called the “flood of the century,” has struck Spain. Torrential rains have led to devastating consequences: at least 158 fatalities have been reported, with numerous areas in the south and east of the country submerged, most severely impacting the region of Valencia. The Spanish government has declared a three-day mourning period starting Thursday, according to Euronews.

Muddy waters have swept cars down city streets, and rural roads have transformed into raging rivers. The Spanish army is assisting with rescue operations, as the flooding has severely damaged infrastructure, leaving many towns isolated from aid. According to the National Meteorological Service, rainfall levels in Chiva, Valencia, reached 491 liters per square meter over eight hours, a record-breaking figure.

Metropolitan Nestor of Korsun and Western Europe sent a message of spiritual support and condolences to the faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Valencia region. He expressed sorrow and offered prayers for the victims, urging all believers to unite in charitable acts to alleviate the effects of the disaster.

“My prayers and heartfelt sympathy are with each of you during these challenging days. I know that clergy and laity are making every effort to help those affected. I call upon all the faithful to unite in prayer and acts of mercy, so we may together overcome the consequences of this calamity,” wrote Metropolitan Nestor.

The clergy of the Romanian Orthodox Church also extended condolences to the Spanish people. Patriarch Daniel expressed deep sympathy for the victims, while Bishop Timotei of Spain and Portugal encouraged the Romanian community to participate in aid and recovery efforts.
