On June 5, 2026, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations, visited a cemetery in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) named after the first-born Apostles Peter and Paul, where he celebrated a requiem mass for his deceased compatriots.
Many Russians who lived in Ethiopia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are buried in this necropolis. Among them is the Resident Minister (Ambassador) K.N. Lishin of the Russian Empire in Abyssinia; Archpriest Pavel Voronovsky, rector of the first Russian parish in honor of the Holy Trinity in Addis Ababa; representatives of the noble families of the Tatishchevs, Turgenevs and others from Russia.
Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk celebrated a requiem mass for his compatriots who died in Ethiopia.
