Feodor Dostoevsky was a devote Orthodox Christian, and one of Russia’s greatest literary minds. He was able to seamlessly blend Christianity into his writings by receiving spiritual guidance from the elders of one of Russia’s major monasteries; the Optina Monastery.

To honor Dostoevsky life and his connection with them, the Optina Monastery has started a project titled “Days of Dostoevsky in the Optina Monastery”. As the Russian side of Global Orthodox summarized;

“The initiative to hold such an event was made precisely in the men's monastery - the Optina Hermitage. This place is directly connected with the life of the writer. He used to come here, talk to the monks in search of answers and get spiritual food for thought. Dostoevsky reflected the knowledge received during his communication with the elder Ambrose of Optina in his novel "The Brothers Karamazov".”

During this event the monks and participants attended a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the future monument to Dostoevsky that will be built near the monastery. The foundation stone included embedded bricks brought from the penal colony that Dostoevsky had been sentenced to by the Soviets.

The monastery also plans on developing a footpath that follows the walk the writer may have taken nearby.

Below is a video reporting the event, while it is in Russian it still gives a good feel as to how the event was, and how admiring Russians are of their literary giant;
