Russia is a powerful voice standing up for Christianity in Europe

An event this past November in Germany well illustrates the contrast between a de-Christianizing Europe, an increasingly Christian Russia, and how the Russian church is becoming an important voices speaking up for EU Christians, whose beliefs and heritage are gradually being expunged from the public space.

In preparations for the G7 meeting last November in the beautiful German city of Muenster, the protocol department of the German foreign office decided that an historic crucifix hanging in an historic hall in which the G7 foreign ministers were to meet was somehow inappropriate, and had it removed, with the city authorities of Muenster complying without objection, at the beginning of Advent, no less.

Evidently the decision was in line with the worldview of German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock, a woke, leftist member of the government from the left-wing Green party. The event caused a small scandal in Muenster politics, but went largely unnoticed in the national discussion.

The offending crucifix

The decision of her ministry was roundly criticized by conservative Muensterites, but here is the crucial point, not in Christian terms, i.e., that this removal of Christian heritage from the public space is dangerous to society, rather making appeals for 'tolerance', and 'historical heritage', as if the Christian nature of the offending crucifix were a minor detail. They didn't event make the Advent connection.

Baerbock never did explain exactly which of her esteemed guests her team thought the crucifix might offend.

The only voice which spoke up for the Christian significance of the discussion, which went barely noticed in the national news flow, came in the form of a sharp rebuke from the Russian Church in Moscow. (See below).

This little Christmas story from the heart of Europe which barely made a ripple in the German national discussion depicts quite well the fact that in an increasingly de-Christianizing Europe, the Russian church in Moscow is emerging as the last strong voice standing up for Christianity for Europeans.

Removing Christian culture from the public view seems to be a goal of the Green party. Earlier the same month, another influential Green minister, Claudia Roth demanded that Biblical inscriptions on the exterior of the Basilica of the Berlin City Palace be covered up, resulting in an angry response from traditionalist Germans.

The offending bible quotation

In the ensuing hubbub, Roth explained that she disagreed with the text from Phillipians, which reads:

"At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth."

Roth explained that the text was put there to justify monarchy, whereas she believes that the current German government has more in common with the Communist revolutions of the mid 19th century.

When news of decision reached Moscow, the foreign office of the Russian Orthodox Church issued a sharp statement lamenting the 'obliteration' of Christian heritage in Europe, standing in 'solidarity' with Europeans who oppose it, pointing out that if Christian values are removed from the public space that its direct opposite will take its place, citing the astonishing rise of Satanism among the German public, and saying that this phenomenon is a real threat to the peace and future of Europe.

Pursuing their policy aimed of obliterating the memory of Christian heritage from the public space, authorities in some European countries thus neglect the rights of believers and the will of their people.

Such disregard for Christian roots undermines European identity and results in the loss of the centuries-old notions of morality based on the faith in Christ.

It is common for the European liberal press to denounce the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church for his repeated statements in which he points out that deliberate eradication of Christian culture in Europe poses a threat not only to the future of the continent, but also to peace among nations which for centuries have been united by their shared Christian heritage.

Yet, the recent news from Germany confirms that the Primate of the Russian Church is right in his assessment of the situation.

Uprooting Christian symbols from the European public life has as its direct consequence the immediate substitution of the Christian heritage for an exact opposite.

Thus, for example, official statistics show that over the past 6 years the number of Satanists in Germany has grown sixteenfold and amounts to 100,000 people.

We express our solidarity with those Europeans who stand up against any attempts to obliterate their historical memory, and state that peace and neighborliness within the pan-European area are only possible if they rest on the common Christian foundation.

Beleaguered German Christians would be hard-pressed to find anything in their national discussion, even from their own churches or conservatives, so stoutly standing up for the Christian faith and it's essential role in maintaining a healthy society.

One reason the Russian church is able to be a stronger voice than European churches is because it is large and monolithic, whereas European churches are divided and speak for smaller factions.
