Approximately 20,000 Orthodox faithful took part in the large-scale “Way of the Saint” procession in the Romanian city of Suceava on June 22, ahead of the annual feast commemorating the translation of the relics of St. John the New of Suceava. Thousands more residents and pilgrims gathered along the streets and at designated stops to greet the procession.

According to organizers, this year’s event attracted a record number of participants, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in northeastern Romania.

The procession was led by a flower-decorated icon of St. John the New. Behind it marched young people dressed in traditional Romanian costumes carrying the national flag and the archdiocesan banner, followed by seminary students, clergy, monks, and thousands of lay worshippers. Representatives of Polish and Ukrainian communities also participated, while military personnel and cadets carried lit torches throughout the route.

Among the church leaders attending the event were Archbishop Calinic of Suceava and Rădăuți, Bishop Andrei of Covasna and Harghita, Auxiliary Bishop Nectarie of the Archdiocese of Chișinău, and Bishop Damaschin, Patriarchal Vicar of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The centerpiece of the procession was the reliquary containing the relics of St. John the New of Suceava, the heavenly patron of the historic region of Bukovina and one of the most venerated saints of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

St. John the New lived in the 14th century and was a merchant from Trebizond on the Black Sea coast. According to church tradition, he openly professed his Christian faith and refused to renounce it despite persecution. He was tortured and executed in what is now Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, then known as Akkerman. Following his martyrdom, he was canonized by the Church, and in the early 15th century his relics were transferred to Suceava by order of Moldavian ruler Alexander the Good, where they remain today.

The Feast of the Translation of the Relics of St. John the New is celebrated annually on June 24 and is regarded as one of the most important religious observances in northeastern Romania. The “Way of the Saint” procession has been held for six consecutive years and has grown into one of the region’s largest annual church events.

Security during the procession was provided by police, gendarmerie units, emergency services, and medical teams. Festivities in Suceava are set to continue with liturgical services, commemorative ceremonies, and meetings with pilgrims who have traveled from across Romania and neighboring countries.
