Thanks to our friend Adam Drakos at Thinking West.

It’s that time of year again. Some of us probably already have our Christmas trees festooned with all manner of festive baubles. Others will have covered their house in so many lights it would make Clark Griswald jealous. Speaking of which, favorite, comfortable films are playing on TV, and at shops and malls (what’s left of them) you are bombarded by a steady litany of “Christmas classics,” such as “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” and other, generally secular songs, some better, some worse. And while there is nothing wrong with fun and familiar songs to celebrate the Christmas season, many do often miss the mark as to what this time of year is really all about, the Advent and Birth of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Word Become Flesh.

What if I told you that in a time before the Great Schism divided East and West into Catholic and Orthodox zones, there was a time when perfectly Orthodox Western Christians composed beautiful songs commemorating this precious event? And that they could be enjoyed today? It takes a little digging, but this is often how treasure is found.

Jesus Refulsit Omnium

Reputedly one of the oldest Christmas songs.

Corde Natus Ex Parentis

By Aurelius Prudentius, a 4th century Christian poet from Roman Spain.

O Antiphons/Veni Emanuel

The Veni is a metrical version of the "O" antiphons or "Great Os" said in Advent during the Vesperal service.

O Sola Magnarum Urbium

Another hymn by Prudentius.
