An interesting video we came across from Spas TV,  one of Russia's top 10 TV channels by audience which broadcasts nationally. There is nothing quite like Spas in the West, which also has Christian broadcasting, but not the size, quality, and resources which Russian Christian channels have, due to government backing.

We found this video interesting because it shows how some of Russia's military units are overtly Christian in their ideology. In this case, it is a volunteer group from all over Russia who are training before joining the front in Ukraine.

Full transcript below.

We should explain that this is not a propaganda piece, in the sense that it does not misrepresent the reality of some elements of Russian society. Russian social media are full of posts indicating similar attitudes, and examples of Russian Christians volunteering to join the front. Russian Christian activists have been among the most active in successfully appealing for donations from the larger public for military supplies which they send to units at the front.

Likewise, the official Russian Orthodox church has been at the forefront of providing aide to refugees both inside the former Ukrainian territories (now part of Russia), and the millions who have been taken in across Russia's vast expanses.

A popular item which is sent to the front by the thousands by Christian groups, and are eagerly adopted by units, are banners with the image of the head of Christ, as in the image below, a Russian battle flag going back to it's very founding in its medieval wars for independence against the Mongols, and the invading Germans and Lithuanians.

According to Christian activists, Christianity is not only being brought to the front by believers, but is also spreading among the rank and file who previously were not religious. They attribute this to the nature of war, which leads men to be more spiritual in any case, and the absence of any other ideology to compete with Christianity.

Whereas in the past, the USSR had Communism, a competing world view, and actively prohibited Christian ideas, today Russia has no state ideology, and as a result, Christianity often fills the vacuum.

TRANSCRIPT:

Small arms artillery does not cease for a minute in the suburbs of Moscow.

Our fighters are training before being sent into combat in Ukraine.

This training is necessary so that soldiers are prepare for

the conditions they'll encounter. The way it's organized now shows what

a tremendous road we've all traveled, including the armed forces, over the past year.

Never pause at the door.

Throw the first grenade, throw the second one,

And then both of you go in ...

Never, ever pause at the door - never!

(inaudible)

We're in the suburbs of Moscow, where they are having combat training at the training ground,

a volunteer unit, a reconnaissance and airborne battalion formed from

volunteer athletes.

We now see the fighters practicing their assault skills.

The objective is to take this building.

We see machine gunners flanking the building and providing a corridor for the

the assault team which is about to enter the building.

The units are preparing just for special tasks, assaults, for

offensive operations.

The training is both physical and psychological.

These guys are doing both.

The people here are ideologues, true patriots, volunteers, who came here with conviction in their hearts.

The building is cleared!

The assault team comes out and the rest provide cover.

That's the way it goes in the war zone as well.

Keep up the pressure, keep it up!

Gather your team!

You, brothers, are athletes in civilian life.

Does this kind of training differ much from athletic training?

Basically, in terms of physical exertion it is very similar.

You just have to think a little differently here.

What about the moral psychological component? How important is it to have

the right battle attitude?

Physical fitness is not the most important thing in battle

The most important thing here is in your head, to be alert when training, when working with

weapons, understanding where you're pointing the weapon, how you're holding it, how you're moving in relation to the other members of the unit.

So you guys are volunteers.

Why did you come here today?

A lot of our friends are fighting in Ukraine, sometimes relatives.

There are a lot of people who need support, who need help. Love for our homeland, love

for close friends. This war could come to us.

That's where things are headed, so we have to help now.

Shooting from the prone position.

What is the most important point?

What is the main point of this exercise?

What do you want a fighter to focus on?

At this point, it's practicing marksmanship,

And a smooth trigger.

And smooth Breathing. Plus we use training ammunition so the fighter learns not to jerk the barrel.

And hit his target accurately.

How are the fighters performing in training?

Is there any progress? Do you notice any dynamics?

Sure, sure. Some come from scratch, some already prepared, but in principle,

we have good instructors.

And the progress is going pretty fast.

Your unit has a certain ideological position,

an ideological coloring.

What kind of people are in it?

What do you talk about in your rare moments of rest?

What kind of conversations?

I guess, mostly how to win this quickly.

I mean, victory in Ukraine.

So we're practicing, practicing exercises in our unit.

Assault, capture.

We're training properly, seriously.

We're being hard on ourselves. 'Monday will be our victory' -

that is our mindset.

Basically, all our fighters have a lot of experience.

We have red berets in the unit, experienced scouts, all kinds of folks ...

but the main thing we have in common is faith in God, in our hearts.

This gives us strength. We are ready to go forward and we will win.

Brothers! In the combat zone in Ukraine,

Soldiers really love when people give them these ...

These are insignia with an ancient battle flag of the Russian people.

Dmitry Donskoy, Alexander Nevsky, and Ivan the Terrible all

went into battle under this banner, and all won.

I wish you victory. May God bless you all and may you all be well.

Our film team is praying for you.

These soldiers are using this rare opportunity for a soldier to say hello, to loved ones through the Spas television channel. Here we give them the floor.

We send our regards to family and loved ones, and to all the cadets at 'Peresvet' our

Christian Orthodox patriotic club.

Greetings from me personally.

All who know and remember me personally: - guys, study hard, it will come in handy in life.

We want to say hello to the Belgorod region.

We are from there. We're doing fine.

Hi to everyone who sees this and remembers us.

Greetings to our parents - we are two brothers.

Hi. Everything is OK, we'll do our best.

To those parents are in the Belgorod region, your sons are doing well.

God bless you!

We have witnessed a variety of exercises today.

Here's another one Please tell me, what are the fighters doing here now?

What is the essence of this exercise?

We try to emulate battle conditions as much as possible to teach how to handle fatigue.

Since the guys are new, we train them how to avoid fatigue.

And how to work while experiencing fatigue.

So it's done so that in combat conditions, too, a person has some kind of reserve

toughness. Exactly.

(soldiers bantering)

(soldiers bantering)

(soldiers bantering)

And so it goes, day after day, the very painstaking and hard work of preparing

personnel, so that our guys go into the combat zone, prepared and ready for

everything. That's how the defense of the Russian world and our common victory is forged.

God help us.
