Christian leaders in Jerusalem have called on Israeli authorities to ensure that worshippers can freely attend Easter services, amid growing uncertainty over possible restrictions during one of the holiest periods in the Christian calendar.

Heads of the city’s Christian Churches, including representatives of the Orthodox community, submitted an appeal to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requesting clear assurances that Easter liturgies will proceed without limitations. The appeal was reported by Orthodoxia News Agency.

The decision followed an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Church Leaders chaired by Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem. After the meeting, an official letter was sent to Israeli authorities seeking clarification on the arrangements for Easter services, including the traditional Holy Fire ceremony.

Church officials say uncertainty persists among the faithful due to the possibility of restrictions, particularly on Holy Saturday, when attendance at services could be significantly reduced. This concern is especially acute among clergy at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and representatives of various Orthodox Churches.

The situation unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing regional tensions and preparations in Jerusalem for two major religious observances: Christian Easter and the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Church leaders emphasize the importance of preserving longstanding liturgical traditions in the Holy City, home to Christianity’s most sacred sites.

Earlier, representatives of the Catholic Church announced adjustments to Holy Week observances due to the ongoing conflict. These include the cancellation of the traditional Palm Sunday procession and the relocation of some services. Despite these changes, churches remain open, and clergy continue to conduct services as circumstances allow.
