St. Cyril of Jerusalem was born in Jerusalem around the year 315 and was raised in the spirit of strict Christian piety. After becoming a monk, he became a presbyter, and in 350, Archbishop of Jerusalem. From the very beginning of his ministry, the saint zealously defended the Orthodox faith, speaking out against the heresies of Arius and Macedonia, thereby incurring the enmity of the Arianist bishops.
In 351, a miraculous sign occurred in Jerusalem: a shining Cross appeared in heaven, stretching from Golgotha to the Mount of Olives. Saint Cyril reported this to Emperor Constantius, hoping to strengthen him in the true faith. However, the persecution of the saint did not stop.: he was repeatedly deposed and expelled from the pulpit.
During one of the famines in Jerusalem, St. Cyril distributed all his possessions, and then began selling church vessels to help those in need. His enemies slandered him, and he was exiled again. He spent some time in Tarsus, then participated in the Council in Seleucia, where they tried to prevent him from attending the meetings. After false accusations, he was imprisoned.
During the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate, the saint returned to Jerusalem. When Julian tried to rebuild the Jerusalem Temple, St. Cyril predicted the failure of this plan. His words were confirmed: the earthquake destroyed the buildings that had been started, and then fire from the sky destroyed the tools. These events stopped the construction.
Despite this, the saint was again exiled. It was only under Emperor Theodosius the Great that he finally returned to his department. In 381, he participated in the Second Ecumenical Council, where the Macedonian heresy was condemned and the Nicene-Tsaregrad Creed was approved.
St. Cyril left a significant spiritual legacy. His most famous catechetical teachings, in which he explains in detail the foundations of the Christian faith and the Symbol of Faith, calling for it to be kept "on the tablets of the heart." He compared the brevity of the Symbol to a mustard seed, which contains all the richness of the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.
Saint Cyril died around the year 386. His life became an example of steadfastness in faith, pastoral service and fidelity to the Church in the face of persecution and trials.
