The Astrakhan Governors exhibition hall of the Astrakhan Museum of Local Lore displays a signature icon of the Russian Orthodox Church saint Bogolep Chernoyarsky, which is kept in the funds of the Astrakhan Museum-Reserve.
During the restoration work, experts discovered the author's signature: "painted by the painter Andrei in 1808, December." The icon painter's surname has not been preserved, except for the initial letter "R".
The earthly life of Bogolep Chernoyarsky, who bore the name of Boris Ushakov in the world, took place from 1847 to 1654. Born into a family of Moscow boyars, from the age of four he lived in Cherny Yar, where his father Yakov Ushakov was appointed voivode. Suffering from ulcers, first on his leg and then on his face, a seven–year–old boy met a wandering monk and asked his parents to cut his hair in the schema, the highest level of Orthodox monasticism, in order to doom his health.
After taking the veil, Boris received the name Bogolep and, as his life says, immediately recovered from "chechui", but soon died of fever. The boy was buried at the Chernoyarsk Church of the Resurrection of the Lord. Later, a chapel was built over his grave. The worship of Bogolep began at the end of the 17th century, as evidenced in the Kaidalov saints. Bogolep's heavenly intercession is credited with protecting the Chernoyarsk fortress from the troops of Stepan Razin, the raids of the Kuban Tatars and the pestilence of 1717.
The Monk Bogolep was canonized in the second half of the XVIII century. In the spring of 1849, part of the Resurrection Church, where the remains of the boy Bogolep rested, collapsed into the Volga, whose stormy waters washed away the shore.
Bogolep Chernoyarsky Memorial Day is August 4 according to the Gregorian calendar.
