In the aftermath of one of the most powerful storms to strike western Alaska in decades, Archbishop Alexei of Sitka and Alaska has issued a heartfelt appeal for prayer and support for communities ravaged by the remnants of Typhoon Halong.

“We pray that the Lord may calm the elements, save the missing, and strengthen the people of Western Alaska,” Archbishop Alexei said in an official statement released by the Orthodox Church in America’s Alaskan Diocese. He ordered that prayers for the victims be offered in all diocesan churches throughout the week.

The storm, which slammed into the Bering Sea coast with hurricane-force winds reaching up to 170 km/h (105 mph), caused widespread flooding and damage, particularly in the remote Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta communities of Quinhagak, Kipnuk, and Kwethluk. These villages, accessible only by boat or small aircraft, were among the hardest hit.

Local reports confirm the destruction of dozens of homes and widespread displacement. In Quinhagak, floodwaters demolished the historic Orthodox Church of St. Michael, and the rectory of Fr. Noah Andrew was also swept away. Fortunately, Fr. Noah and his family survived and are reported to be safe.

Emergency crews and military helicopters have been deployed to evacuate residents and deliver essential supplies. Temporary shelters have been established in Anchorage and Bethel to house those displaced. The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued at least 51 individuals from flooded homes, while hundreds more have found refuge in local schools and community centers.

Authorities report significant damage to airstrips, power lines, and sanitation infrastructure. One woman was confirmed dead, and two people remain missing. Over a thousand residents have been left homeless, with some homes reportedly carried several kilometers inland by floodwaters.

His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon, the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, also addressed the faithful, calling for nationwide prayer and solidarity. “May the Lord strengthen the people of Alaska and grant them peace and hope in these difficult days,” he said.

Church and civic leaders continue to coordinate relief efforts, calling on volunteers and donors to assist in the long recovery process for Alaska’s isolated and vulnerable communities.
