The Albanian Orthodox Church has urged its believers to take part in the population census and ensure they indicate their religious affiliation in the questionnaire. The appeal was published on the Albanian Church's website.

The population census, scheduled to run for six weeks starting from September 18, 2023, was emphasized by the Church as an important process during which data on religious affiliation will also be recorded.

"As this part of the census is optional, please pay attention and be responsible by requesting to specify your religious affiliation as 'Orthodox Christian.' Double-check and ensure that the answer to the question about religious affiliation is entered correctly," the appeal to believers stated, as published on the Albanian Church's website.

The last population census in Albania was conducted in 2011. At that time, less than 10% of citizens identified themselves as Orthodox Christians. The Albanian Church did not accept this result and stated that the number of Orthodox Christians in Albania is at least 30% of the population.

The Catholic Church of Albania has also reached out to its congregation, urging them to participate in the census and indicate their religious affiliation in the questionnaires.

According to the data from the previous census, the majority of believers in Albania identify as Muslims (56.7%). Catholics accounted for 10.03%, Orthodox Christians 6.75%, people with other religious beliefs 5.49%, atheists 2.5%, Bektashis 2.09%, and other Christians 0.14%. Additionally, 13.79% declined to answer this question.
