On March 21, 2025, during the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, the World Council of Churches (WCC) issued a statement regarding the violations of the rights of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijan. This was reported on the Council's website.
"The World Council of Churches expresses deep concern about the ongoing illegal detention of Armenian citizens by Azerbaijan. The capture and holding of hostages violates fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and represents a serious human rights violation," the statement reads.
According to official data, there are currently 23 Armenian prisoners in Baku's prisons, including soldiers, officials, and civilians. Of these, 15, including representatives of the country's military-political leadership, are currently undergoing high-profile trials. International human rights organizations claim that many of the detainees have been subjected to cruel treatment. The WCC has called for their immediate and unconditional release, emphasizing that the violation of the detainees' rights undermines efforts to establish peace and reconciliation in the region.
"The World Council of Churches expresses solidarity with the Armenian Church and people, as well as with all those affected by this situation, and reaffirms its commitment to justice and peace," the statement adds.
The World Council of Churches also called on the UN Human Rights Council to take all possible measures to ensure the release of the prisoners, and for the international community to assist in protecting their rights.
According to Armenpress, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Anitta Hipper, stated that Brussels "takes very seriously" reports of the mistreatment of Armenian prisoners and is closely monitoring the situation.
"It is crucial that Azerbaijan ensures the right to a fair trial and proper conditions of detention in accordance with its international obligations. Allegations of torture and other violations must be promptly and impartially investigated," Hipper emphasized. She noted that the trials in the Baku Military Court are of significant importance for the prospects of peaceful resolution. The EU will continue to support the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
