A group of clergy and Orthodox laity visited the Detention Center No. 6 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in Moscow, where women suspected and accused of crimes are being held. Holy Week in places of detention is a special time. The ancient tradition of visiting prisoners on bright Easter days continues to this day.
On April 23, 2025, on Bright Wednesday, in the church of the Martyrs of Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sofia, located on the territory of SIZO-6, a conciliar festive divine service took place — Easter Matins and Divine Liturgy, which were led by the chairman of the Synodal Department for Prison Ministry, Priest Kirill Markovsky.
The service was attended by representatives of the prison's management and staff, Orthodox volunteers, and prisoners.
For imprisoned women, participation in such a solemn service and the special attention paid to them by the clergy is a great spiritual consolation. Women always endure the ordeal of incarceration and separation from their loved ones, especially children, more and more emotionally. According to the women themselves, in many ways, faith and the spiritual advice of the prison priest help them patiently endure the ordeal of captivity.
At the end of the Liturgy, a traditional procession was held, at the end of which Priest Kirill Markovsky addressed the audience with a pastoral address.
After the service, the clergy and choristers of the church choir visited a number of cells of the detention center and congratulated the prisoners on Easter. In each of the cell rooms, the head of the Synodal Department for Prison Ministry held talks, and the choir singers performed Easter hymns. The day before, on the feast of Holy Easter, all the prisoners received Easter treats — consecrated cakes.
In the first days of Holy Week, cathedral services were held in prison churches in all pre-trial detention centers in Moscow. The clergy and Orthodox volunteers made a modest tour of the institutions and congratulated the prisoners, as well as the staff of the pre-trial detention center, on Easter. About 14,000 Easter cakes were given to prisoners and staff.
