The All—Russian conference "Religion and Power: the Life of the Church in Armed Conflict - the XX century" opened at the State Museum of the History of Religion on June 10.
The organizers state in the annotation to the conference: "In the face of mortal danger, it is natural for a person to turn to eternal values. Therefore, in the context of armed conflicts, the importance of religious institutions inevitably increases. The last XX century was no exception. Many modern military confrontations have their roots in that era. This year, the purpose of the traditional annual scientific conference from the cycle "Religion and Power" will be to study the activities of religious associations in conditions of various types of military operations in the XX century."
The conference is traditionally attended by leading historians, researchers of Church life, and priests.
The scientific forum will last two days. Four plenary sessions are expected. The round table "The religious factor in the conditions of armed conflict" and the presentation of the collective monograph "The Church in the conditions of Civil War" will also be held tonight.
The conference was organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the State Museum of the History of Religion and the St. Philaret Institute with the support of the Society of Lovers of Church History and the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Society of Intellectual History.
