A new monument honoring Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanov will be installed near the Tretyakovskaya metro station in Moscow, according to a report by "Rossiyskaya Gazeta." The initiative was spearheaded by the "Elisabeth-Sergei Enlightenment Society" and supported by the local council of the Zamoskvorechye district and the Moscow Commission on Monumental Art. The monument is expected to be unveiled by the end of 2024.
The sculpture will feature the figures of the Grand Duke and Duchess standing on a small pedestal, with four plaques behind them recounting key moments from their lives. The monument will be located near the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy, which was founded by Elizabeth Feodorovna. After her husband's tragic assassination, the Grand Duchess devoted her life to charitable work, withdrawing from the social sphere to focus on helping the needy.
Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the fifth son of Emperor Alexander II, served as the Governor-General of Moscow from 1891 until his death in 1905. He was killed on February 4, 1905, in a terrorist attack when his carriage was bombed by Ivan Kalyayev, a member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party. Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna was later canonized as a martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church. This year marks the 160th anniversary of her birth.
