In the Zomba district (Eastern Province, Malawi), the restoration of the temporary Saint Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles Church has been completed. The reconstruction included installing a new roof, raising the height of the walls, and setting up an altar and stone iconostasis. The work was led by the church's rector, Priest Ezekiel Chikonda.
The church, built by the parishioners, had deteriorated over time and required repairs. The restoration became possible thanks to the support of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa and the Synodal Department for Church Charity. Funds to assist the Orthodox community in Malawi were quickly raised through the "Pomozhem" platform on the mirom.help website in January 2025.
The Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa expressed gratitude to all donors, noting that the community will now be able to gather regularly for services without the fear of rain.
Earlier, the Synodal Department for Charity had already assisted the Orthodox community in Malawi. In December 2024, the Exarchate provided support to those affected by Cyclone Freddy, distributing food packages to 1,650 families across 44 parishes.
Additionally, from December 22 to 29, 2024, Father Dionysius Grishkov, the head of the Missionary Department of the Moscow Diocese, visited Malawi to coordinate humanitarian aid together with Father Joachim Bakali, the dean of the South African Diocese in Malawi. During the trip, the priests visited nine parishes and delivered more than a thousand food packages.
