The Macedonian branch of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has initiated a database as part of the "Monitoring of Orthodox Cultural Heritage" project. Alongside this development, the organization's experts have presented a comprehensive report on the outcomes of their research, as reported by religija.mk.

Over the past two years, the organization's experts have conducted an examination of over half of the total number of registered churches and monasteries in all eight dioceses of the Macedonian Orthodox Church - Ohrid Archbishopric. Detailed reports for each of the 707 surveyed sites have been published, containing information on their location, construction history, current condition, associated risks, and specific recommendations for addressing issues.

The report highlights the state of the country's most renowned church, the St. Sophia Cathedral in Ohrid (9th century), describing the building as overgrown with grass on all sides. The commission notes noticeable damage to the wooden brackets of the exonarthex and vegetation on the walls and roof of the church.

Regarding the famous Monastery of St. Gabriel of Lesnovo, the report notes the almost complete irreversible loss of frescoes in the upper parts of the church, specifically in the naos directly below the dome arches.

A particular warning was issued for the Church of St. Dimitri, located north of the Vardar River near the Stone Bridge in the capital.

"On the north wall, in the central upper part, in the opening where a fan is installed, water leakage is visible, which has a destructive effect on the wall painting. The capitals of the gallery column have minor damages. There is an intertwining of internal installations: electrical, heating, cooling, creating a fire hazard situation," cautions the report on this church building.
