The Russian Embassy in Laos has submitted an application to the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs for the official registration of the Russian Orthodox Church in the nation. This information was reported by TASS, citing Alexander Radkov, the head of the Russian Cooperation Representation in Laos, who participated in the seventh national conference of the Union of Russian Compatriots in Thailand.
"The initiative to establish a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church in Laos appeared several years ago. At present, it has moved into practical implementation, and an application has been submitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Laos for the registration of the religious and public organization of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is currently under consideration. We hope that over time, a land plot will be allocated, and a church will be built," he stated.
Radkov emphasized that "Laotian authorities generally support this initiative."
As reported by the Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia, a home church dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky was recently arranged in the Laotian capital, Vientiane. Previously, Orthodox liturgies in Vientiane were held in the premises of the Russian House or the Russian Center for Science and Culture, and now regular services will take place in the new church.
In October 2023, the Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia, Metropolitan Singapore and Southeast Asia Sergei, visited the Lao People's Democratic Republic and met with the director of the local Department of Religious Affairs.
