In November 2024, a new temporary church dedicated to the Apostle John the Theologian was constructed in the village of Michiamikuru, located in the Meru deanery, under the auspices of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa. The previous structure could no longer accommodate the growing number of parishioners, and on December 1, the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the new church by Fathers Moses Mugambi and Arsenius Kariunga.

Orthodox communities in Kenya, like Michiamikuru, frequently struggle with limited space for worship. Many parishes, such as those dedicated to the Theotokos in Lugari and St. Nicholas in Nyeri, have been holding services outdoors, under tents, or in makeshift structures.

According to the Exarchate’s press service, parishioners have managed to construct stone walls for these churches. However, completing the buildings — including roofing, window and door installation, and electrical connections — remains unachievable due to financial constraints.

The Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, Metropolitan Konstantin of Zaraisk, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all donors contributing to these projects.

"Thanks to donations, the necessary amount of 871,355 rubles has been raised to complete the Church of the Theotokos. For St. Nicholas Church, 769,692 rubles have been collected, but an additional 778,925 rubles are still required for completion," the press release stated.

The Exarchate continues to call for support, emphasizing the vital role of these churches in the spiritual lives of local Orthodox Christians and the broader mission of Orthodoxy in Africa.
