Georgia marked the 904th anniversary of the historic Battle of Didgori, a defining moment in the nation’s history that led to the liberation of Tbilisi and the dawn of Georgia’s Golden Age under King David IV the Builder.

A prayer service and commemorative ceremony took place in the Didgori Valley, located 40 kilometers from Tbilisi, where in 1121 Georgian forces achieved a miraculous victory over the vastly larger Seljuk army. The service was led by Metropolitan Shio of Senaki and Chkhorotsku, Locum Tenens of the Georgian Patriarchal Throne, according to the press office of the Georgian Orthodox Patriarchate.

In his address, Metropolitan Shio highlighted the spiritual and historical significance of the battle, calling it “a great miracle performed by God through the Holy King David.” He emphasized that the triumph at Didgori symbolized the power of faith, unity, and perseverance — values still vital in facing modern-day challenges.

“The Battle of Didgori is a testament to the strength of a nation that prays, believes, works, and fights with faith in God. It is a lesson for us today as Georgia confronts new trials,” the Metropolitan said.

He conveyed the blessings of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II and reminded attendees that this year also marks 900 years since the passing of Saint King David the Builder, whose visionary leadership and commitment to the Church laid the foundation for a flourishing Georgian state.

The Battle of Didgori, fought on August 12, 1121, is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable military victories in Georgian history. Outnumbered by the Seljuk army, King David’s forces delivered a decisive blow that enabled the reconquest of Tbilisi and ushered in a period of cultural, political, and religious renaissance.

Metropolitan Shio concluded his message with a powerful reminder:

“The Battle of Didgori continues — it is not over as long as Georgia endures.”
