In the Week of the Publican and the Pharisee, on February 25, celebrations dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the revival of the Bryansk Diocese were held at the Cathedral in the Name of the Holy Trinity in the city of Bryansk. By the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on February 26, 1994, it was separated from the Orel diocese and gained independence.
On the feast day, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Metropolitan Alexander of Bryansk and Sevsk, Bishop Sergiy (Bulatnikov) of Velikiye Luki and Nevel (Pskov Metropolia), Bishop Vladimir of Klintsovsky and Trubchevsky. The bishops were served by the clergy of the Bryansk and Klintsovo dioceses.
At the end of the Liturgy, a thanksgiving prayer to the Lord was performed.
After the service, the head of the Bryansk Metropolia addressed the audience with a holy word, congratulating everyone on the significant date. In particular, he said: "The history of Orthodoxy in the blessed Bryansk land goes back centuries, and the fact that the episcopal see existed here already in the XIII century testifies to the rich spiritual continuity that we inherited. At the same time, the life of the diocese preserves dramatic pages of history: the events of the early 20th century led to the fact that the Russian Church, persecuted for 70 years, was on the verge of its existence. However, sincere living faith, which was preserved in the hearts of people in a thin stream, spread like a wide river in the 90s, when our country experienced the so-called second Baptism of Rus. Therefore, today's anniversary date, which is closely related to it, is, first of all, the triumph of faith and confirmation of the words of the Apostle Paul: "Do not be deceived: God is never mocked" (Gal. 6:7), and then it's time to take stock and reflect on what happened."
Vladyka Alexander thanked the regional authorities for their productive collaboration in the spiritual development of modern society and the transfer of high moral ideals to the younger generation.
In prayerful memory of the significant event, Metropolitan Alexander presented the bishops with a panagia with the image of the icon of the Mother of God "The Helper of Sinners". This holy image first became famous in the Bryansk region, in the Karachevsky Nikolo-Audrin convent in 1843, now its venerated list is kept here.
His Eminence presented the head of the region with an icon of the holy Prince Roman Bryansky, who founded the Svensky Assumption Monastery in the XIII century.
The Governor of the Bryansk region congratulated the clergy and all believers on the occasion: "The Diocese acts as the guardian of historical memory and Christianity. Over the past three decades, tremendous changes have taken place: the Bryansk Metropolia was formed, whose 10th anniversary we celebrated last year. Orthodox shrines continue to be restored, and the number of parishes and clergy has increased. The Orthodox faith has always saved our people, and today we rely on traditional spiritual and moral values, which are defended by the Russian Orthodox Church and our President, national leader Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. This is patriotism, a strong family, mercy, justice, unity of the peoples of Russia."
Today, the Bryansk diocese consists of 194 churches, 10 monasteries (6 male and 4 female), 222 clerics, and 77 monastics. In 2012, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill consecrated the newly built Holy Trinity Cathedral in the city of Bryansk, and in 2019 - the restored Assumption Cathedral of the Svensky Assumption Monastery. On the 30th anniversary of the revival of the Bryansk Diocese, a silver shrine for the relics of the Holy Prince Oleg of Bryansk was installed in the Holy Trinity Cathedral by the care of benefactors. It was made in the workshop of Russian church art "Kivoriy". On the eve of the celebration, the holy remains, which have been in the cathedral since 2012, were transferred to a new beautiful and elegant shrine, and on the festive day the faithful bowed to the heavenly intercessor of the Bryansk region, asking for mercy and intercession to their native land.
