On December 8, 2023, the grand opening of the V Christmas Educational Readings of the Minsk Metropolis "Orthodoxy and domestic culture: losses and gains of the past, the image of the future" took place in Zhodino.
The conference is organized by the Minsk Metropolia of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and the Minsk Regional Executive Committee.
Clergy, government officials, cultural figures, scientists, heads and teachers of educational institutions, medical and social workers, Sunday school teachers, students, and representatives of other fields of activity were invited to participate in the readings.
On December 7, breakout reading sessions were held in Minsk, Borisov, Zhodino, Molodechno, Slutsk, Soligorsk and Maryina Gorka, which focused on social service, cooperation with healthcare institutions, historical and cultural Orthodox values in the spiritual, moral and patriotic upbringing and education of children and youth, cooperation in the field of mass media, interaction in areas of culture, youth work, experience of Sunday schools, experience of interaction with military-patriotic clubs and other topics.
The opening ceremony of the readings began with a prayer for every good deed, after which Metropolitan Veniamin of Minsk and Zaslavsky, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, made a welcoming speech.
"Christian ideals and traditions, embodied in cultural creations throughout history, have contributed to the unity and spiritual enlightenment of our people. However, in the modern global world, culture is becoming more and more a space of collision of various images, meanings and ideas," said Metropolitan Benjamin. – Increasingly, we can observe the disregard of any moral and value orientations. Some cultural figures understand it as a space free from any restrictions and existing for any self-expression while encouraging everything base in a person. The reason for these processes is seen, first of all, in a deviation from spiritual and moral principles, a departure from the Christian spirit in the field of culture and art."
Referring to the Minsk region, His Eminence noted that a lot has been done in recent years in the field of preserving cultural heritage: temples are being restored, monuments are being erected, books are being published. "But we must admit that we are only at the beginning of the journey here. It is important that the attention of scientists, researchers, and local historians be more focused on our rich spiritual heritage. We can still find, return what was lost in many ways, and make it the property of national culture," Metropolitan Benjamin concluded his speech.
