The State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics will demand a ban on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) through the court if it does not dissociate itself from the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) by August 24. This was announced by the head of the service, Viktor Yelensky, on the air of the Rada TV channel.
"The next step is a lawsuit to terminate the activities of the UOC. These are steps that are dictated to us by law," he said.
Yelensky recalled that the department he previously headed demanded that the UOC "publicly dissociate itself from the ROC, notify the Local Orthodox Churches of its withdrawal from its structure and terminate its organizational relationship with the ROC." The requirement must be fulfilled by August 24.
On August 16, the UOC published an open letter on its website, in which it refused to provide evidence of a break with the ROC. Yelensky noted that the State Service for Ethnopolitics does not consider this letter to be an official response to its demands and expects that the UOC will fulfill the prescribed instructions by the specified date.
