Is this Ukraine-related war hysteria, or something more sinister?

The organizer of the conference, Paul Gilbert and the Tsar Nicholas website which he operates, were forced to cancel the conference scheduled for September of this year due to threats of violence he described on his excellent website:

Shortly after announcing the event several months back, I began to receive hate-filled messages and emails from “Russophobes” in the UK, who threatened to “disrupt” the conference. Most of these messages were generously peppered with profanity – which reflected their bigoted and hateful anti-Russian sentiment.

As if this wasn’t bad enough, the church – where the conference was to be held – in Colchester, England had been targeted by anti-Russian thugs. The police even had to get involved!

The conference had no political agenda, whatsoever, which begs the question “WHY” would thugs target an event dedicated to the study and appreciation of Russia’s last Tsar?

While I understand the anger towards Putin for ordering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, I fail to understand any connection between Putin and Nicholas II, especially given that more than a century separates their lives.

The event  was to be held at St. John's Orthodox Church in Colchester, where Fr. Andrew Phillips is the rector. Phillips recently posted an excellent long article about Grigory Rasputin A Life for the Tsar: Gregory Efimovich Rasputin-Novy (1869 – 1916), which completely revises the historical view of him, from a villain to a hero.

It is a common and popular view among conservative Russian Christians, and we highly recommend it to understand the changing views about Rasputin in Russia, whom many are insisting must be canonized.

Here is a video of a revered Russian elder, Nikolai Guryanov, saying that Rasputin is a slandered hero.

Another controversial subject in Russia is the question of the authenticity of the remains of the Tsar and his family, and this too is likely to have come up at the conference.

It is possible that the threats were just related to the conflict in the Ukraine, although, as Gilbert points out, the connection is a bit of a stretch.

Perhaps some people really don't want revisionist thinking about the Tsar to spread in the West.

Here are some St. Nicholas II memes from our social media channels.
