Robert Francis Prevost, American Cardinal and Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, became the new pope.
The new pope took the name Leo XIV. This is the first pontiff from the USA in history.
His name was given by Cardinal-Protodeacon of the Roman Catholic Church Dominic Mamberti. From the balcony of St. Peter's Cathedral, he uttered the famous Latin formula "Habemus papam!" ("We have a dad.")
The conclave of Cardinals elected the pope on Thursday evening, on the second day of the conclave meeting, in the fourth round of voting.
The new Pope Leo XIV, appearing before the faithful on Thursday for the first time since his election, wished them peace and urged them to build bridges of dialogue.
"Peace be upon you all! Dear brothers and sisters, this is the first greeting of the risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for the flock of God. I would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts and reach your families, all people, wherever they may be, all nations, the whole earth. Peace be with you!" said the new Pope.
"Help us build bridges of dialogue by joining together to become one people in the world forever," he added.
