There are three anniversaries related to the Grand Duchess St. Elizabeth, born Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt, and her husband Grand Duke Serge Romanov, uncle of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, celebrated at the same time.

First, one hundred and thirty years ago, in 1891, Grand Duke Serge was appointed Governor General of Moscow, the ancient Russian capital (at that time, the capital city of the Russian Empire was St. Petersburg) and the couple moved to Moscow. Later, in 1905, Grand Duke Serge was assassinated in the Moscow Kremlin by a revolutionary terrorist.

Second, in the same year (1891), Grand Duchess Elizabeth joined the Orthodox Church. She had no obligation to do that. She had married while being a devoted Lutheran, but after several years in Russia, having gotten to know the Orthodox faith, she firmly made up her mind. Remarkably, she received approval from her Grandmother Victoria, Queen of  England.

In 1918, on the day after the murder of the Russian Royal Family, she was buried alive in an abandoned mine by Communist henchmen. Canonized by the Russian Church, she has become one of the most dearly beloved Saints in Russia and all over the globe.

Finally, this year marks the tenth anniversary of the Educational Society of Grand Duchess Martyr Elisabeth and Duke Serge. Upon the invitation of the Mayor of Moscow, Mr. Serge Sobianin, the celebration was held in the Mayor’s Office, having started with a prayer service to St. Elizabeth and St. Sergius of Radonezh.
