Christ the Savior Cathedral recently hosted a “master class” on effective media and social media communication techniques for the purpose of informing parishioners of diocesan and church activities. The class, “Information support of dioceses 'educational activities,” was conducted by a panel that included clergy and media experts such as Alyona Kuleshova, a SPAS journalist with 20 years experience.

It was explained why it is necessary to write about the activities of diocesan departments of religious education and catechesis, and called for cooperation and greater activity on the internet. Alena Bogdanova, Head of the Parochial Schools Sector, gave a general overview of the navigation of local Orthodox Internet resources. She talked about information sources, showed examples of different content, and explained the role of social networks.

Alyona Kuleshova, from SPAS, covered questions like, How to write interesting news? How do I start a text? Why do I need a test proofreading? What does the visual design do? Stressing that texts are read and to be treated with attention, she reminded participants about fact-checking, organization of texts, and writing them in a clear, understandable manner.

Priest Vladislav Beregovoy, a participant of the Christmas Readings and veteran blogger, also spoke. He explained why it is necessary to use social networking, how important communication with the audience is, and indicated the time to answer questions from subscribers. He also noted that it is necessary to get away from formality, in order to bring the text closer to the audience.

It is hoped that the participants of the class walked away with a renewed zeal to reach out to the public on behalf of the Church and take their place in the battle for hearts, minds, and souls that rages in the infosphere.
