In the aftermath of devastating flash floods that swept through northeastern Romania in late July, the Romanian Orthodox Church has launched a nationwide relief effort to aid affected communities. At least three people were killed, thousands were evacuated, and hundreds of homes were damaged as torrential rains triggered widespread flooding across Suceava and Neamț counties.

According to Basilica.ro, the official news outlet of the Romanian Patriarchate, the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți quickly deployed priests and volunteers to the hardest-hit villages, provided food for rescue workers, and continues to support cleanup operations.

The city of Suceava has estimated recovery costs at €78 million.

In one of the most impacted areas, the town of Broșteni, the Metropolis of Banat sent humanitarian aid including shovels, boots, tools, and other emergency supplies. Other dioceses, including those of Roman and Bacău, Arad, and beyond, have launched donation drives to collect food, clothing, and money for victims.

The Archdiocese of Iași took a leading role by allocating 300,000 lei (about €60,000) and launching a dedicated fundraising campaign. Based on damage assessments, 109 families in Neamț County will receive financial assistance ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 lei.

In total, about 25 villages across nine counties suffered damage from the severe weather, which included heavy rain and high winds that tore off roofs, uprooted trees, blocked roads, and destroyed bridges. Some communities remain without electricity.

The Romanian government has requested assistance from the European Union. Through the RESTORE emergency fund, millions of euros are expected to be allocated for infrastructure repair and long-term recovery, Euro News reports.
