The Romanian Orthodox Church has issued a public warning about the rising popularity of gambling and its social consequences, describing problem gaming as a growing threat to families, public morality and individual well‑being.
In an official statement the Patriarchate said gambling creates a false expectation of “easy earnings” and can develop into a serious addictive disorder that compromises personal freedom and moral bearings. Church leaders compared gambling addiction to substance dependence, noting its profound effects on brain function and behavior.
The statement highlighted the wider harms of gambling: financial ruin, family conflict, social isolation and severe psychological crises, with vulnerable groups — particularly young people — at heightened risk. The Patriarchate noted that in some cases addiction has precipitated tragic outcomes, including suicides.
Calling for collective action, the Church urged authorities, civic institutions and families to cooperate on prevention, regulatory limits and expanded support services for those affected. It also pledged to provide spiritual and pastoral assistance, encouraging a return to values rooted in faith, work and mutual aid as part of recovery and prevention efforts.
