Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko visited Valaam Island on Lake Ladoga, the Telegram channel Pool One reported.
According to the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, the heads of state visited the church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. A prayer service was held there, then Putin and Lukashenko continued to communicate on Valaam.
In addition, they also visited the Romanov Monastery. One of the monks noted that the Romanov family was the initiators of its construction.
Putin arrived on the island before his Belarusian counterpart. He was met by the governor of the monastery, Vladyka Pankraty. After a while, the President of Belarus joined them.
The heads of state attended the service, and they held candles in their hands during prayer. His son Nikolai, who was also at the prayer service, arrived with Lukashenko. The Presidents also got acquainted with the interior painting of the temple.
Vladimir Putin often visits Valaam. The last time he came to the island with Lukashenko was in July last year. Then the presidents visited the Transfiguration Cathedral, visited the grave of Archimandrite Methodius, who played an important role in the revival of the Valaam Monastery, as well as the hermitage in honor of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, where they pray daily for the deceased soldiers who laid down their lives for faith and fatherland.
The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Valaam Stavropol Monastery is a monument of Russian architecture. More than one hundred thousand pilgrims visit it every year. The monastery has farmsteads in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sortavala and Priozersk. Now about 200 inhabitants live in the monastery. The monastery complex includes a central manor house and 17 monasteries.
The monastery is actively engaged in economic activities. There is a dairy farm, a dairy, a trout farm, an apiary, and two hotels for pilgrims that can accommodate about 300 guests.
