The tragic news came from Nigeria. It is known that Christians in this country are often subjected to violent attacks by Islamic terrorists. Unfortunately, during another horrific terrorist attack, two local parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Church were among the victims.
On the morning of March 6, Islamic terrorists attacked the Christian village of Turan in the Kwande region (Benue State) in Nigeria. The photo shows the place where the tragedy occurred.
The Islamists killed some of the residents, wounded some, and the rest had to leave their homes immediately to escape. Ten bodies of those killed have now been found. The number of victims may increase, as the search of the surrounding area is still ongoing and new bodies may be discovered.
A community of the Russian Orthodox Church from among the local residents operated in this village, which was nurtured by Archimandrite Nifont.
Two of those killed were our parishioners, John Akule and Daniel Ahemba. These are the first African parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Church who were killed for their faith. We ask everyone to offer prayers for their repose.
However, the surviving members of the community need immediate help. Archimandrite Nifont, a cleric of the Exarchate, reports: "People had to leave everything, and due to the influx of refugees to the nearest town, it is difficult for many to find even drinking water and food. Some also need medical attention."
There were fifty Orthodox Christians in Turan, twenty of whom were children.
The Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa announces an urgent collection of donations to help the families of the victims, as well as the Orthodox Christians of this community who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
